Biography

Abolfazl Simorgh is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), Spain. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in 2017 and 2020, respectively, graduating first-ranked student in both programs. He earned his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from UC3M in 2024, with cum laude distinction, and has also been a visiting scholar at TU Delft.

His research interests include control theory and applications, optimal control systems, air traffic management (ATM) research, aircraft trajectory optimization & climate change, drone path planning, and reinforcement learning. He has contributed to several European research projects, including FlyATM4E, ALARM, RefMAP, and  4ECLIM, and is currently coordinating ZENTIA, a European project (2 million EUR) focused on integrating next-generation aircraft to support zero- and low-emission aviation. He has published more than 15 JCR journal articles (including publications in a Nature Portfolio journal), and more than 16 conference papers, many developed through international collaborations.

He has a strong commitment to scientific communication and knowledge transfer, reflected in his contributions to state-of-the-art open-source Python libraries such as CLIMaCCF, ROOST, and ROC. He has received several prestigious recognitions, including the Luis Azcárraga Aeronautical Innovation Award (2023), Best Paper Awards
(Aerospace Journal and ICRAT Conference), and the SESAR Young Scientist Award (second place, 2025).
