Biography
Andrea Ianiro received BSc (2006), MSc (2008) and PhD (2012) degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Naples Federico II (Italy). His doctoral research focused on heat transfer and flow fields using advanced measurement techniques like tomographic particle imaging velocimetry and infrared thermography. After his PhD, in 2012, Andrea received the Rem Soloukhin Gold Hand Award for Young Scientists.
Since 2013, he has been a faculty member in the area of Aerospace Engineering at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), becoming a Full Professor in 2022. At UC3M, he has developed research on non-stationary aerodynamics, turbulence, and heat transfer, integrating artificial intelligence and modal analysis. Within his research, Andrea has supervised seven PhD theses and is currently co-supervising five more. All his former students hold faculty positions in Universities, or research positions in industries.
His research received funding from multiple sources including funding as a PI of four national research projects (2017-2027), an MSC Doctoral Network (2024-2027), and a regional project. In 2024 he was awarded an ERC consolidator Grant (SPANDRELS: SParse AND paRsimonious Event-based fLow Sensing) with a funding of 2M€. He has also led some industry-funded research contracts with Airbus.
Andrea has international collaborations spanning Europe, North America, and Asia. He is a member of the scientific board of several international conferences including the International Symposia on Flow Visualization, the International Conferences on Fluid Control, Measurements, and Visualization and the International Symposia on AI and Fluid Mechanics. His work in heat transfer earned him the Yasuki Nakayama Medal (FLUCOME 2019), and in 2022, he was named an Emerging Leader by Measurement Science and Technology. Andrea has co-organized two prestigious Lecture Series at the Von Karman Institute and has co-edited Experimental Aerodynamics (CRC Press, 2017) and Data-driven Fluid Mechanics (Cambridge University Press, 2022).
