UC3M launches the course University Microcredential in Data-intensive Aerospace Engineering

9 Sep

The Department of Aerospace Engineering at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) is offering the University Microcredential in Data-intensive Aerospace Engineering, a hands-on program combining data analysis and machine learning techniques applied to aerospace engineering.

The course focuses on the use of Python and interactive Google Colab notebooks to tackle real-world aerospace challenges, from aerodynamic design to engine diagnostics and weather forecasting.

Learning objectives

  • Analyse and interpret aerospace data using exploratory techniques.

  • Apply machine learning models: regression, classification, dimensionality reduction, clustering, and neural networks.

  • Develop data-driven workflows to support innovation and decision-making in aerospace applications.

Methodology
The program combines theoretical lectures with a strong practical approach. Students will work directly with real or high-fidelity simulated datasets through guided examples and project-based learning.

Use cases include

  • Aerodynamic performance prediction of airfoils using regression and convolutional neural network (CNN) surrogate models.

  • Predictive maintenance of turbofan engines.

  • Multivariate time series analysis from onboard sensors and satellite data for weather forecasting.
