SCIENCE AND INNOVATION WEEK 2022

The Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M) has organised a program of science dissemination activities as part of Science and Innovation Week 2022, an event taking place from 7 to 20 de noviembre de 2022.
The Department of Aerospace Engineering is taking part in the event by proposing the following activities:

“Descubre cómo funciona un cohete de plasma”
  • Place: Hall of the Juan Benet building of the UC3M Leganés campus (Avda. de la Universidad, 30, Leganés)
  • Opening hours: Wednesday 9 from 19:00 to 20:30
  • Speakers:
    Davide Maddaloni, PhD student of the UC3M Aerospace Engineering Dept.; Mario Merino Martínez, Professor of the UC3M Aerospace Engineering Dept.
  • Description of the activity:
    Learn how plasma space propulsion works and the latest developments we are tackling at the University. We will show you some plasma engines in our laboratory to see and touch.

“Descubre cómo generar energía limpia con cometas y drones gigantes”
  • Place: Hall de la Biblioteca Rey Pastor del Campus de Leganés de la UC3M (Avda. de la Universidad, 30, Leganés)

    Exhibition on energy generation using giant kites/drones and their advantages. Includes videos, posters and elements developed by UC3M (kites, avionics, control system).

“¡Aprende a volar con aviones de papel!”

    Take part in a fun competition! In this workshop you will playfully learn the basics of flight mechanics behind a successful paper aeroplane.

“¿Cómo funciona un turborreactor?”

    The thermo-fluid dynamic quantities, thrust and fuel burn of a turbojet will be measured in the laboratory in order to understand its operation and environmental impact.

“Gatos, brújulas, globos y su inesperada relación con los satélites”

  • Description of the activity:
    Live demonstration with experiments on the physical principles behind the movement of satellites in space and how their ability to orientate themselves relates to common objects.

“Experimentos de plasmas y principios de propulsión espacial eléctrica”

  • Speakers:
    Davide Poli , PhD student and researcher at the UC3M Dept. of Aerospace Engineering; Diego García Lahuerta , PhD student and researcher at the UC3M Dept. of Aerospace Engineering.
  • Description of the activity:
    The audience will observe plasma discharges in multiple devices and we will observe the basic principles of electric propulsion with a device capable of flying thanks to air ionisation.
