Biography
Stefano Discetti holds a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Naples, where his doctoral research contributed to advancements in Tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). During the Ph.D., he was awarded a competitive fellowship for a research stay at Arizona State University under the supervision of Prof. Adrian, a leading expert in PIV and turbulent flows.
He is currently a Full Professor in Aerospace Engineering at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), where he previously served as Associate Professor and led the Aerospace Engineering Research Group in 2021-2022. He is also Visiting Professor at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics. His research focuses on the development of optical measurement techniques for fluid flows and flow control strategies using machine learning. He has been awarded competitive funding, including a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant (NEXTFLOW), national and regional research grants, a Beca Leonardo from BBVA Foundation and industry-funded projects.
Stefano Discetti has contributed to the scientific community through editorial and committee roles, serving on the Editorial Board of Measurement Science and Technology, the Steering Committee of the ERCOFTAC Special Interest Group in PIV, and the Scientific Council of the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer. Additionally, he is actively involved in several international committees of conferences and symposia on fluid mechanics, flow measurement and control.
As principal investigator, he has secured substantial research funding (>4Meur) for scientific projects and infrastructure development. He has supervised 6 Ph.D. candidates, many of whom have continued their careers in academia, research institutions, and industry.
Beyond research, Stefano Discetti is committed to scientific outreach and dissemination, participating in public engagement initiatives and promoting the visibility of research outcomes through various communication channels.
